AS2 Blog 2 – Analyse the artist

In this blog I will talk about artist and their genre, performer’s style/ image and the song style of the artist.

The artist of the song (Castle) that we choose is by Halsey.  As an artist Halsey is unique, as she is assorted with both appearance and style of the songs she writes and singes on stage. Ashley Nicolette Frangipane goes by the name Halsey as her stage name, this is very common in the music industry, which shows that she knows has the music industry works and that she is original for it. She chose Halsey as her stage name because it was an anagram of her real name. Halsey is 21 years old. She was born on 29^th of September 1994 in Washington, New Jersey. She started writhing songs at the age of 17, which is a good age for the music industry. Halsey is unique to other artist because as the age of 16 or 17 she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and she consider her self to be biracial and bisexual. However she started everything by posting cover of different artist on YouTube at the age of 12 under her real name. 

Since than she has come far, by 2014 she was finally given chance to get in the big legal by getting her first signed record contract with Astralwerks and released her debut EP called ‘Room 93’. The Album came third on ‘Top Hearseekers Albums (Billboard)’, which shows that it was successful for them.  The music style she goes by is Electropop. This is because when she was young, in her childhood she was taken in by the music her parents listened too. Her father listened to bands such as Slick Rick, 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G. and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, whilst her mother listened to The Cure, Alanis Morissette and Nirvana. Later on in 2015 she released her album called ‘Badlands’. The story behind the album is that it is a suggestion to Halsey’s in-mind is a desolate and lonely place as a metaphor.  The album was a success by 97,000 copies sold in the first week.  Most of Halsey songs are about freedom, love, corruption and sadness. For example in her music video ‘New Americana’ it shows how the world is divide by power, which is rich and the power. This is because she states “Survival of the richest, the city’s ours unit the fall”. The songs elaborate the normalisation of aspects of counterculture, including the use of same sex marriage. Overall Halsey is very popular artist loved by her fans and many others, no just because of her music but also by her personality, style and charisma.
